What Files Markup cannot do that Safari redaction can

iPadOS Markup with Apple Pencil is a drawing layer. It is excellent for circling a clause in a meeting and terrible as a substitute for removing PDF text. Recipients who open the same file in Preview on a Mac, or in a desktop reviewer, can often still select the glyphs under your ink. The larger glass makes that mistake feel professional: the boxes look sharp, the Pencil line is straight, and the text is still there.

Safari on iPadOS can load this page, take a PDF from the Files picker, and burn boxes into a flattened export. That is a different pipeline from Markup, from GoodNotes, and from the App Store PDF editors that default to iCloud sync for every annotated packet. Legal and health PDFs do not belong in an extra iCloud-synced annotation library just because the Pencil felt precise.

The Files picker itself is the other iPad constraint. Recents, iCloud Drive, On My iPad, and third-party File Provider tiles (OneDrive, Drive) can all show the same title. Markup-annotating the iCloud copy leaves the original in the cloud and a marked copy that still has a text layer. You want a distinct export, stored somewhere you can find without grabbing the synced original by thumbnail.

How to draw permanent boxes in Safari on iPadOS

Open this page in Safari—not in a PDF app’s in-app browser, not in Files Markup. Use the iPad redaction tool on this page and pick the PDF from Files. The file stays in that Safari tab on the iPad. You are not adding another subscription, and you are not sending the packet to a remote covering service.

1. Rotate to landscape. Stage Manager or Split View with Files on one side helps you confirm which file you picked (On My iPad versus iCloud) before you draw.
2. Zoom with pinch, then draw with Pencil or finger. Pencil helps on dense tables; it does not make Markup into redaction. You still need this flattened export.
3. Export and open the new PDF in Files. Search inside Files or in Safari’s PDF view for the covered names and account strings. Select across a black region.
4. If an external keyboard is attached, use it to page through a long filing while the Pencil stays in your hand for boxes. Review every page before you consider the meeting copy done.

Screenshots of a slide you marked up in another app are an image problem. Photos imported from the camera roll still carry capture metadata. This tool only flattens the PDF you opened in Safari.

Three iPad sessions where Pencil markup is not enough

A counsel meeting at a conference table often ends with “I’ll markup this lease on the iPad and send it tonight.” Markup circles are notes. If the send is supposed to withhold a Social Security line or a home address, finish flattened boxes in Safari and send that export. AirDropping the Markup file from Files sends annotation, not covering.

A field visit where you photograph a paper form into Files as a PDF scan still has OCR. Pencil scribbles over the name on the image do not delete the OCR. Load the scan here, box the name and the barcode region, and search the export.

Split View with a client Zoom on one side and Files on the other makes it easy to drag the wrong PDF onto the share sheet—the iCloud original sitting at the top of Recents. Drag or pick the export you just downloaded, and check the file date.

iPad mistakes that keep the iCloud original in play

Covering in Safari does not rewrite the iCloud Drive object. Anyone with the shared link still has the unredacted file. Change sharing on the original.

Trusting Pencil neatness without a search test is how a partner’s Mac copies a “blacked out” Social Security number out of your pretty rectangles.

Saving the export back into the same iCloud folder with a nearly identical title guarantees the wrong tap tomorrow. Put the export in On My iPad or a tighter folder, and keep the original out of the meeting share sheet. HidePDF is the local Safari path when Markup is only ink.
