What a phone screen and the Play Store actually constrain
Android redaction fails for phone reasons, not because “PDF” is abstract. Chrome’s file picker talks to Downloads, Drive, WhatsApp Media, and Gmail’s saved attachments—and those are different folders. The original bank PDF often still sits in the Gmail thread or in WhatsApp’s document store after you think you “opened it here.” A Play Store editor that asks for All files access is a different risk than a browser tab that only sees the one file you pick.
The screen is small. Account numbers live in six-point type in a statement footer. A finger-drawn box that looks solid in portrait mode often misses a digit on the right edge. Pinch-zoom is not optional; it is the only way to see whether the box closed. Mid-range phones will also kill a Chrome tab that tries to rasterize a fifty-page scan while Instagram and Maps stay resident.
Samsung Internet, Chrome, and Firefox custom tabs from Gmail do not all expose the same file picker. An in-app browser inside Gmail or a bank app may not let you choose a local PDF at all, or it may hand you a cached copy you cannot distinguish from the attachment still sitting in the thread. Finish covering in a full browser, then attach the new file from Downloads—not by hitting “forward” on the original message.
How to redact a PDF in Chrome on Android
Save the attachment to Files first so you have a path you can find again. Open this page in Chrome—not in Gmail’s custom tab. Load the PDF with the Android redaction tool on this page. Bytes stay in that Chrome tab on the phone. You do not need a Play Store PDF suite with storage permission, and the file is not sent to a remote redaction service.
- Rotate to landscape if the statement is wide. Pinch in on every account line, SSN fragment, and address block before you draw.
- Drag a box with a fingernail or stylus. Lift and zoom again. If a descender or a routing digit peeks out, extend the box; do not hope the recipient’s viewer will crop it.
- Export. Android will drop the file in Downloads (or ask which app should handle it). Open that new file from Files, not from the Gmail bubble.
- Use the PDF viewer’s search for the covered strings. If search is clumsy on the phone, Nearby Share or a USB cable can get the export onto a desktop viewer before you send anything sensitive. Do not skip the search because the screen looked black.
Photos of a paper statement taken with the camera are not this workflow. Those JPEGs carry location and device tags, and covering them is an image job. HidePDF only burns boxes on the PDF you loaded.
Three Android send paths that attach the original
WhatsApp’s document picker defaults to Recents. Recents still shows the file that arrived in the chat yesterday. If you tap that thumbnail, you resend the unredacted attachment. Open Files, go to Downloads, and pick the export you just saved. Confirm the timestamp.
Gmail’s paperclip on a reply-all thread loves the original attachment sitting in the draft. Compose a new message, attach from Downloads, and leave the old thread alone. Forwarding “the same email with a note” keeps the unredacted PDF in the MIME structure even if your new paragraph says it is covered.
A banking app’s “share statement” sheet often lists Chrome, Drive, and the messenger in one row. Sharing into Chrome to cover is fine; sharing the statement straight to a landlord from that sheet skips covering entirely. Cover in Chrome, then share the Downloads copy.
Android mistakes that leave text under finger-drawn boxes
Drawing in portrait on a dense 1099 or a three-column EOB is how a column of digits survives. Landscape plus zoom, or wait until you have a tablet or desktop for that file.
Installing a “PDF blackout” app from Play that only adds annotation objects will look covered in that app’s viewer and still search in Google PDF Viewer or a landlord’s Windows machine. Search the HidePDF export in a second app.
Leaving Chrome in the background while a 40-page scan exports on a 4 GB phone can abort the job with a killed tab. Close Maps and video, plug in, and wait for the download toast.
