What Mobile Safari’s file picker actually offers
On iPhone, the covering job starts at the picker, not at the boxes. Mail does not hand Safari a PDF in a way you can trust from the in-app viewer. The reliable path is Save to Files, then Browse: On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, or the Mail attachments folder you actually used. Recents will happily surface the unredacted message attachment you saved yesterday, sitting above the export you made two minutes ago.
Markup from the share sheet in Files or Photos is still a drawing overlay. It is the tool people use in a rideshare when a landlord texts “black out the SSN.” The landlord’s desktop search will still find the number. Mobile Safari running this page can flatten boxes; Markup cannot be assumed to.
The share sheet after you finish is the third iPhone-specific trap. AirDrop, Messages, and Mail remember the last PDF you touched. That is often the original from Recents, not the Safari download. Low Power Mode will also stretch rasterization time until you think the tab froze; plug in for anything longer than a two-page form.
How to redact in Safari before Mail or Messages
Save the attachment to Files. Leave Mail. Open Safari (full Safari, not Gmail’s or a bank app’s in-app browser). Load the PDF with the iPhone redaction tool on this page. The bytes stay on the phone in that tab. Cellular covering does not send the medical or bank PDF to a remote service just because you are not on Wi-Fi.
- Pinch-zoom every account line, date of birth, and barcode caption. A thumb box on a 6-inch screen misses the last two digits more often than it feels like it does.
- Draw the box, lift, pinch again. Two-finger pan to keep the region under your thumb without collapsing Safari’s chrome into a mis-tap.
- Download. iOS will offer Files. Put the export in a folder you will recognize. Open that file from Files and search. If Files search is weak on that PDF, wait until you can open the export on a Mac or PC before you send high-risk pages.
- Attach from Files Browse, not from Recents, and not by forwarding the original Mail message.
HEIC photos of a paper bill are not this tool. Strip capture metadata and cover the image separately if that is what you actually have. HidePDF only treats the PDF you picked in Safari.
Three iPhone share-sheet traps
Forwarding the Mail thread “with the SSN covered” still includes the original MIME attachment. The covered file has to be a new compose with a Files attachment. The thread history keeps the unredacted PDF for everyone already on the CC line; you cannot un-send that.
AirDrop from Files Recents will send whichever tile is highlighted. Recents sorts by last open, and opening the original to “check what still needs covering” puts that original back on top. AirDrop the export after you open the export.
Messages document picker shows large thumbnails that hide the full filename. Open the tile’s info if you can, or pick from Browse / Downloads. Sending the bank’s original PDF in iMessage because the thumbnail looked identical is how statements leak in group chats.
iPhone mistakes on a small screen
Skipping zoom on a dense EOB leaves member IDs in the footer. Landscape helps; it does not replace pinch.
Using Markup, then exporting “as PDF,” can still carry a text layer. Search the HidePDF download, not the Markup copy.
Letting Safari sit in Low Power Mode until iOS unloads the tab mid-export produces a truncated file that looks like a download. Check page count against the source. If the phone is struggling, stop and finish on a larger device. HidePDF keeps the work on-device in Mobile Safari; it cannot fix a share sheet that still points at Mail’s original attachment.

Zoom in on small account numbers, page headers, and footers because finger-drawn boxes can miss narrow text. Check whether the share sheet attaches the new export or the original. Also inspect screenshots or images sent in the same conversation.
