Redact PDF On Windows Free — Free in Your Browser
Black out sensitive PDFs on Windows without paid Acrobat or questionable desktop installers.
Windows users may have Edge and Chrome available even when Acrobat, desktop PDF tools, or installers are blocked by IT. A free in-browser redaction workflow is useful for statements, onboarding forms, or client files as long as the final PDF is tested for hidden text removal.
HidePDF runs entirely in your browser, which matters for a free workflow that does not require Microsoft Store purchases. Your PDF never uploads to our servers; processing happens in local memory on your device. Upload portals blocked by policy still leave Edge available—HidePDF processes files entirely client-side, avoiding another MSI request.
How HidePDF works
Open your PDF on Windows
Use Edge or Chrome with the redaction tool on this page below—no MSI installer and no upload while you redact on Windows.
Draw permanent black boxes
Click and drag over account data, HR files, and client documents in Edge or Chrome. Each box is burned into the rasterized page so the original text layer cannot be recovered.
Download and verify
Save the redacted PDF, then try select-all and search in a viewer. Redacted regions should not return readable text.

Windows environments often lack approved PDF tools except the browser. Upload portals blocked by policy still leave Edge available—HidePDF processes files entirely client-side, avoiding another MSI request.
Corporate proxies cannot read local PDF bytes. Snipping Tool screenshots: HideShot; webcam photos of documents: MetadataWipe.
What Edge can do when AppLocker blocks Acrobat
A managed Windows 10 or 11 laptop often allows Edge and Chrome and denies MSI installers, Microsoft Store PDF editors, and Acrobat. The covering job then happens in the browser you already have, or it does not happen until IT opens a ticket you do not have time for. Edge’s built-in PDF viewer can highlight and draw ink; those are annotations. A landlord or a court clerk who opens the same file in another viewer can still search the text under your ink.
“Print to PDF” with black rectangles drawn in Word or in Edge ink is the other Windows habit. Print drivers flatten appearance and often keep a text layer or an OCR layer from the scan. The free local workflow is: load the source PDF in a modern browser, burn boxes that destroy the covered region, download a new file, and search it in a second program—Edge’s viewer, the old Adobe Reader if it is already present, or Chrome.
Known Folder Move to OneDrive means Downloads and Desktop may already be in a tenant cloud. Covering an export does not rewrite the original that OneDrive already synced. Windows Search will also index the unredacted PDF in those folders. Treat location as part of the job, not as wallpaper behind the browser.
How to redact in Edge or Chrome without an MSI
Use Edge or Chrome with the free Windows redaction tool on this page. No Store purchase, no Acrobat, no extra executable. The PDF stays in the tab on the PC. Corporate proxies see the page load, not the bytes of the statement sitting in RAM.
- Copy the source out of a OneDrive-synced Desktop into a local folder if policy allows, so you are not covering the only cloud object in place.
- Draw boxes over account data, onboarding Social Security lines, and client names. Zoom; high display scaling can hide a peeking glyph at the box edge.
- Save the export. If Edge dumps it in Downloads, and Downloads is OneDrive, move the export to the folder you actually intend to send from.
- Open the export in a different viewer than the tab that drew the boxes. Search the covered strings. Select-all. Copy across a black region. Ink from Edge’s PDF viewer is not this test.
Snipping Tool captures of a PDF window are images. Webcam photos of paper forms carry capture metadata. This page only handles the PDF you loaded in Edge or Chrome.
Three Windows environments without a licensed editor
A help-desk image with AppLocker will not run a downloaded redaction .exe. Cover in Edge, verify in the same Edge as a new window opening the download (or in Reader if it is already installed), and send the export. That avoids the MSI request and avoids a consumer web service your DLP team already blocked.
A home PC that never bought Acrobat still has Edge. Previewing in Microsoft’s PDF handler and drawing black shapes is the Preview-on-Mac mistake with different branding. Use the browser tool, then search in a second handler.
A library or hotel kiosk where you cannot install anything can still cover a short PDF in Edge if you are willing to treat the kiosk disk as hostile: use a USB copy, cover, save back to the USB, and assume the kiosk kept a Download. Prefer your own machine when the file is high risk. The kiosk case is why a no-install browser path exists at all.
Windows mistakes involving Downloads, OneDrive, and overlays
Attaching from Downloads\statement.pdf after covering, when Explorer sorted by name not date, often grabs the original that landed there from Outlook an hour earlier. Sort by date modified, or use a distinct folder.
Edge ink and Adobe Reader comments look covered on your monitor. Opposing counsel’s Relativity database will extract text. Search the HidePDF export.
Leaving the unredacted original in a OneDrive share you already sent to a client means they still have it. Covering a local export does not revoke that share. HidePDF processes the file in the browser so you can finish covering without another installer; it does not unsync OneDrive or empty the Recycle Bin. Those are Explorer and admin-center jobs that sit beside the boxes.

Frequently asked questions
How do I redact a PDF on Windows without paid Acrobat?
Open HidePDF in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox, load the PDF, mark the sensitive fields, and download the redacted copy. Then open the export in another viewer and search for the covered terms. Store the original and redacted versions in clearly separated folders.
Does this replace Adobe on Windows?
For blackout redaction yes; advanced Bates tooling may still need pro software. Use the tool that matches the risk and volume of the job. For regulated productions, follow your organization's approved process.
Can Windows PDF viewers show text that looked redacted?
Yes if the redaction was made with overlays in another program. Test the HidePDF export with search, select-all, and copy-paste in Edge or Adobe Reader. Covered strings should not appear.
Works in Edge and Chrome?
Yes - any modern Chromium or Firefox-based browser on Windows 10/11. Keep the browser updated for file handling and canvas performance. Very old enterprise builds may need IT review.
What should I know about Windows temp files and downloads?
The redacted export usually lands in Downloads unless you choose another folder. Rename it clearly so you do not attach the original by mistake. Follow your workplace retention rules for both copies.
