License fields to hide versus what a verifier may still need
A driver-license PDF is a dense identity plate: portrait, signature, license number, street address, date of birth, class, restrictions, endorsements, issue and expiry dates, and often a REAL ID indicator. The back of the same scan usually adds a PDF417 barcode that encodes more than the face of the card, plus a magnetic-stripe image on some copier jobs. People send this file for age checks, gig onboarding, apartment applications, and “just in case” KYC. Those purposes do not share a field list. An age check may need portrait, expiry, and a birth date or year. A background vendor may demand the license number. A landlord who only needs to confirm you can drive should not receive your current street address on a PDF that will be forwarded to a maintenance vendor.
Barcodes are the failure mode. Blacking out the printed number while leaving the 2D code intact gives a scanner the full payload: name, address, DOB, and document number. Restriction codes (corrective lenses, prosthetic, CDL notes) and veteran or donor designations are extra attributes you may not owe a website. Height, weight, and eye color are low-value for most verifiers and still useful for impersonation.
Ask what the recipient will do with the file. If they only glance at age, cover number, address, barcode, and signature. If they must scan the card, you cannot redact the barcode on that official copy—use a different, narrower share for everyone else. How to black out a license scan here
- Open the PDF in the redaction tool. If front and back are two pages, plan boxes for both before you export.
- Leave only the fields the verifier named: often portrait plus expiry, sometimes DOB. Everything else starts hidden.
- Draw a generous box over the PDF417 (or other) barcode and any magnetic-stripe photograph. Do not crop tightly around the printed number and call it done.
- Cover license number, address, signature, and optional designations (donor, veteran, REAL ID star) unless the recipient’s written process requires them.
- Check watermarks, copier tickets, and a second thumbnail page some phone scanner apps append.
- Export and try selecting the license number and street name. Search the file for the number string. Then confirm the barcode area is fully black, not a dark transparent overlay.
Why a license PDF gets sent with too many fields live
Gig or delivery onboarding that asked for “a photo of your license.” The platform may only need to confirm you are of age and the card is unexpired. Cover the address and barcode on the copy you attach to a chat thread. If the vendor later requires a scan, send that through their official channel, not a second unredacted PDF in email.
A rental office that wanted ID with the application. They already have your application address. Reprinting the license address and document number in a tenant PDF that leasing agents forward is extra exposure. Leave the portrait and expiry if they match faces at move-in; hide the rest unless state or company policy says otherwise.
A workplace badge request routed through a contractor. Security may need to match a face. They rarely need your home street on a PDF sitting in a vendor ticketing system. Box address, barcode, and license number; leave the photo if that is the point of the request.
License-scan mistakes that leave data in the file
Redacting the front and skipping the back. The barcode payload is usually on the reverse. A one-page “front only” email still often includes page two from the original scan.
A tight box on the number that misses the overflow digits in a hologram area. Draw wide. Search the export for the number.
Leaving the barcode “for authenticity.” Authenticity for a casual reviewer is the portrait and expiry. A scannable code is a database dump. Cover it unless a regulated process requires a machine read.
Sending both a redacted PDF and the original camera JPEG. The JPEG still has the full card—and often GPS. Share one flattened PDF; keep the photo off the thread.
