Sejda PDF redact alternative with permanent local blackout
Sejda is a capable visual PDF editor. Its Whiteout tool is not redaction. HidePDF is the local alternative when you need the underlying text actually gone.
Sejda is one of the better-known browser PDF editors: visual text edits, forms, signatures, annotations, and a desktop app if you do not want the online path. People search “Sejda redact alternative” because they saw a Whiteout or shape tool and assumed it was redaction — or because they hit Sejda’s free-tier task limit mid-job. Those are different problems. This page treats both honestly.
HidePDF does not try to replace Sejda as an editor. It replaces the mistaken redaction step: covering sensitive content in a way that actually removes it from the file you send, without sending the unredacted original to Sejda.com.
What Sejda is — verified from their own product
Sejda’s online PDF editor is explicit about uploading files (including from Dropbox or Google Drive). They state files travel over an encrypted connection and are permanently deleted after processing, and they currently advertise automatic deletion after two hours plus a free envelope of 200 pages or 50 MB and 3 tasks per hour. Those are Sejda’s published terms, not a third-party rumor.
Sejda Desktop is a real alternative they sell for people who would rather not upload: same editing features, files stay on the computer. If your only objection is the online hop and you already like Sejda’s editor, Desktop may be the in-family answer.
The redaction trap is Whiteout. Sejda’s own UI copy says Whiteout hides content but will not completely remove underlying text or images, and that it is not suitable for redacting sensitive data. That sentence is the whole story. A white or black rectangle drawn as an annotation or cover still leaves a text layer a recipient can search, copy, or extract. Calling that “redaction” is how people leak SSNs from “blacked out” PDFs.
Sejda may also expose a separate redaction-style workflow in parts of their suite; third-party tests disagree on how complete some paths are. We are not inventing a lab result. We are taking Sejda at their word on Whiteout and treating “true redaction” as something you must verify with search and copy-paste after export — in any tool, including ours.
What HidePDF is
HidePDF loads a PDF in your browser with pdf.js, lets you draw black boxes, and exports a new PDF with those regions burned in (rasterized pages) so the covered text is not sitting under a rectangle. The file is not sent to a HidePDF server for processing. There is no 3-tasks-per-hour meter. There is also no form editor, no “change this paragraph’s font,” no OCR suite. If you needed those, you needed Sejda (or Acrobat, or Foxit) — not a redactor.
Head-to-head differences
Cover vs removal. Sejda Whiteout is documented as incomplete removal. HidePDF’s export is built to destroy the visible content in the marked boxes. Always verify: search the output for a known string; try to copy from the black region.
Where the original goes. Online Sejda: you upload. Sejda Desktop: local. HidePDF: local in the browser, no install. If policy forbids vendor copies of unredacted client PDFs, online Sejda is the wrong box to tick even when Whiteout is not involved.
Limits. Sejda free online: task, size, and page caps they publish in-product. HidePDF: hardware and browser memory. Huge depositions may still be happier in a desktop suite.
Editing vs redacting. Need to fix a typo and then black out an SSN? Sejda can edit; HidePDF cannot. Need only the SSN gone? HidePDF is the shorter path.
When to stay with Sejda
Stay with Sejda for filling forms, signing, annotating, find-and-replace, and light visual edits. Stay with Sejda Desktop if you like that editor and want it offline. Do not stay with Whiteout for anything you would call confidential.
When HidePDF is the better redact alternative
Choose HidePDF when the deliverable is a permanently blacked-out PDF, you do not want to install Sejda Desktop, and you do not want the unredacted file on sejda.com even for two hours. Choose it when you already hit the free task cap. Choose it when you need a mental model of “boxes are burned in,” not “covered.”
