Redact a PDF for a Restraining Order Before You Share It for Safety Planning

Protective order paperwork proves the court acted. It also prints addresses, phones, and third-party details that can undermine safety if the wrong inbox sees them. Burn those fields in before the PDF leaves your machine.

Burning in redactions…
Preparing pages…

Protective and restraining order PDFs exist so you can show that a court limited someone’s contact, proximity, or communication. The same pages often list residential addresses, workplace locations, phone numbers, email addresses, children’s schools, and third-party witnesses. Sharing an unmarked copy with an employer’s security desk, a school office, or a support advocate can be a legitimate safety step — and it can also leak the exact location you moved to for safety if those fields stay readable. The goal of a redacted share is to prove the order while withholding the details that would help someone find you or another protected person.

HidePDF is for the safety-planning copy you are about to send: draw boxes over addresses, phones, and third-party identifiers the recipient does not need, burn them into a flattened page, and keep a complete original for counsel and for any channel that requires the full court text. This is not a divorce decree walkthrough and not a child-custody agreement guide, even when family court issued the order. Processing stays in this browser tab.

How HidePDF works on a restraining order PDF

STEP 01

Load the order copy you will send

Open the tool on this page and choose the PDF from local storage. Scanned stamped orders and portal downloads often carry an OCR text layer under the image. Treat that layer as live data until you flatten.

STEP 02

Box location and contact data, leave protective facts

Cover petitioner or protected-person addresses and phones you do not want that inbox to store. Cover third-party witness contacts when the recipient only needs the order’s operative paragraphs. Leave names, restrained conduct, and effective dates readable when security or a school must enforce the order.

STEP 03

Download and search

Save the burned-in copy. Search for a street name, a phone digit string, and the case number if you meant to hide it for a wider share. If any of those paste into a text field, the box was only paint. Enlarge it and export again.

STEP 04

Keep the unmarked original

Label the redacted file so it cannot be filed or forwarded by mistake when counsel needed the complete stamp page. The full order stays in your records for attorneys and courts.

What a protective order packet typically contains — and what a recipient actually needs

The order’s operative pages state who is protected, who is restrained, what contact is forbidden, distance rules, and expiration or hearing dates. An employer security team or a school office usually needs those paragraphs to know what to watch for. They rarely need a confidential residential address printed in a header, a personal cell number, or a shelter location that appeared on a temporary order sheet.

Addresses are the core risk. People sometimes redact the respondent’s old address while leaving the petitioner’s new street visible on page two — which defeats the point of a safety copy. Walk every page for every protected person’s location data, including workplaces and schools listed as “stay-away” sites when those sites should not be redistributed beyond the people enforcing the order.

Case numbers and captions can identify the courthouse file. A DV advocate who already opened your matter may need the number. A broad email to a large workplace distribution list may not. If a searchable docket would expose sealed or sensitive details, cover the case number on that share and confirm the order verbally with the security contact who needs to know.

Third-party details ride along often: a friend’s phone on a declaration, a child’s school address on a parenting-related protective order, a counselor’s office on a proof page. Those people did not ask to be listed in an HR inbox. Cover their identifiers unless the recipient explicitly needs them to carry out the order.

Family-law overlap is common but not identical. If you also need to share parenting schedules or divorce financial exhibits, those are separate masks — see redact PDF for a child custody agreement and redact a divorce document PDF. Do not assume a custody redaction habit automatically protects a new address on a restraining order page.

How to flatten a safety-planning copy

  1. Decide who will receive this file. Employer security, a school office, a DV support advocate, and your attorney are different audiences. Cover more location data for broad workplace shares. Follow counsel for court channels.
  2. Open the PDF in the tool above. Walk every page of the temporary and final orders, including continuation sheets and proof-of-service pages.
  3. Box addresses, phones, emails, and third-party contacts that would undermine safety if stored in that inbox. Leave the protective scope and dates readable for enforcement.
  4. Export. Search. Try select-all. If a covered street or phone appears in a find box, you only drew a rectangle on the picture. Run it again until search is clean.
  5. Send the burned-in file for that channel. Keep the unmarked order labeled for counsel and official use.

Sharing a protective order without exposing a safe location

Sending a redacted copy to employer security. They need to know who is restrained and what conduct is forbidden on company property. They do not need your new home address in the company ticket system. Cover residential and personal contact fields; leave the operative order text.

Giving a child’s school office a safety copy. The office needs pickup restrictions and names. It does not need every phone and alternate address on the stamp page. Burn extras in before the front desk files the PDF.

Sharing with a DV support advocate. Advocates often already have intake facts. Still cover third-party witness numbers and shelter locations that should not sit in an email thread you cannot later delete from every device.

The marker-on-paper mistake — and other ways an order stays readable

Redacting the respondent while leaving the petitioner’s new address visible. That single miss can undo the reason you shared a safety copy. Search for every street and unit number on every page.

Leaving a case number that identifies the courthouse file on a wide distribution. If the docket is searchable, treat the number like an identifier and cover it when the audience is broader than counsel or a known advocate.

Blacking out a printout, then scanning it back. The marker hides paper. The new PDF can still carry OCR, or you may later attach the unmarked digital original. Permanent redaction is a burned-in region on the file you send, then a search to prove the string is gone.

Using a highlight or sticky note as “redaction.” Recipients can remove annotations and read the text underneath. HidePDF’s export is meant to flatten black regions into the page image so the text cannot be copied out.

Treating divorce or custody redaction as a drop-in substitute. Protective orders have different fields and different safety stakes. Use this page for the restraining or protective order PDF.

Frequently asked questions

What should stay visible on a restraining order copy for an employer or school?

Security offices and school staff often need the parties’ names as they appear on the order, the protected scope, key dates, and enough of the caption to confirm the order is real. They do not need a new residential address, a private phone, or third-party contact details that exist only for court service. Leave the protective facts readable. Cover location and contact data that would defeat the purpose of sharing a safety copy.

Is redacting a restraining order the same as redacting divorce or custody paperwork?

No. Divorce decrees and custody agreements are family-law outcomes with parenting schedules and financial exhibits. A protective or restraining order is a safety instrument: who is protected, who is restrained, and what contact is forbidden. Audiences include employers, schools, and advocates, not only co-parents or attorneys. Use this page for the protective order PDF, not as a substitute for divorce or custody guides.

Why isn’t covering an address with a PDF highlight enough?

Highlights and comment boxes sit on top of the page. Recipients can remove them or copy the underlying text. Permanent redaction means the black region is burned into the page image so the hidden string is gone from the file you send. Search the export to confirm.

Does HidePDF send my restraining order PDFs to a server?

No. The PDF is processed in local browser memory on this page. Your protective order packet is not sent to HidePDF for redaction.
