Their homepage pitches the original online editor and form filler, plus a Windows desktop app and paid tiers for conversion, merge, watermark, and richer editing. That is a real product. It is not a redaction product, and using it as one is a common, expensive-looking mistake: you draw a black box, the page looks clean, and the text layer is still there.

What PDFescape actually offers
PDFescape Online lists: edit PDF files, annotate, fill forms, create basic forms, password protect, share documents online, view PDFs. Their how-to is blunt: go to the online editor and upload your PDF. Premium and Desktop add conversion, merge, watermarks, compression, and deeper text/image editing. None of that list is “search and permanently remove content.”
In PDF software generally, annotation (highlight, black rectangle, whiteout-style overlay) paints on top of content. Recipients can often select through it, search the hidden string, or extract text with a trivial tool. That failure mode is why Adobe, Foxit, and others ship a separate Redact command that deletes content and then paints the mark. PDFescape’s public feature set is the editor/annotator family. Independent writeups that test “free redact tools” routinely fail overlay-style editors for this reason. We are not inventing a PDFescape-specific scandal; we are describing how annotation-based cover works.
What HidePDF offers instead

Fair tradeoffs
PDFescape wins at free form filling, quick annotations, and a familiar online editor. The Windows desktop option exists if you want that suite offline. If your PDF job is “type on this application” or “add a signature stamp,” HidePDF is the wrong site.

Free PDFescape online has historically had document length and feature gates versus paid plans. Exact current page caps change; check their pricing if you are buying. HidePDF does not sell a Pro SKU for redaction.
Another PDFescape habit that bites redaction shoppers: sharing a document online with a link. That feature is listed on their product page. A “blacked out” PDF that is also hosted as a shareable document is two problems — overlay cover plus a hosted original. HidePDF’s download is a file on your disk. You decide the channel. If you needed a share link, you needed a document host, not a redactor, and you should host only the already-burned copy.
Password protection on PDFescape is also not redaction. Encrypting a PDF hides it from people without the password; it does not remove the SSN from the file. Recipients you intended to include still see everything. Redact first if some recipients should see less; password-protect afterward if the channel requires it. Mixing those two ideas is how “we protected it” emails still leak.
A combined workflow that does not leak
If you must fill a form in PDFescape, do that on a copy that does not yet contain extra secrets you planned to hide — or fill first, download, then redact the filled copy in HidePDF before anyone else sees it. Never email the PDFescape working file because the black boxes “look done.”

PDFescape is built to edit, annotate, and fill forms. Those jobs leave content in the file on purpose: a filled field is supposed to remain a value. A black rectangle drawn as an annotation is still a drawing on top of live text unless a later sanitize step destroys the text. People use PDFescape because they already filled the form there, then they draw a box over an SSN and email the file. Recipients who show comments, flatten differently, or extract text still recover the number. HidePDF is built to paint opaque regions into a rasterized page so the export’s Find bar should fail on the covered string.
Use PDFescape to fill. Use this page to destroy. Mixing the two without a search test is how a “redacted” I-9 still pastes a SSN. No upload is required for the blackout pass.

If the form is already filled, export or download that filled PDF to disk. Open the filled copy in the redactor on this page. Box the fields the next recipient should not see. Leave the fields they must see. Export and search.
- Do not treat PDFescape’s black shape as finished redaction. Finish here, or in another tool that actually burns and then prove it with Find.
- Watch for form fields that still hold a value under a box. Flattening into a page image is the point of this tool; still verify.

A volunteer fills a background-check authorization in PDFescape, then needs to hide a Social Security card scan that was merged as page three. Filling was the right editor job. The card image is a destruction job. The volunteer boxes the card here, leaves the signed authorization, and searches for the number. Sending the PDFescape file with a drawn rectangle over the card is how a league administrator recovers the digits.
A tenant fills a rental application in an editor, then wants to attach a bank statement with the account hidden. The application can stay an editable-looking form if the landlord requires that. The statement should be a flattened blackout from this page. Combining them into one PDF after both jobs are done is fine. Combining them before the statement is burned is not.
An HR coordinator fills an I-9 Section 2 in an editor, then needs a copy for a steward that does not include the List A document number. Editor-swap mistakes that leave comments as the only “redaction”
If the black box moves when you show comments, it was never redaction. If Select All still highlights a ghost of the SSN, it was never redaction. HidePDF is the pass that is supposed to end that argument—after you search.
