PDF24 redact alternative — same idea, no cloud hop
PDF24 honestly rasterizes pages so redaction cannot be peeled off. HidePDF does the local version of that job without sending the PDF to PDF24’s servers.
PDF24 is easy to like. The redact tool at tools.pdf24.org is free, unlimited, and unusually honest in its FAQ: when you save, pages become raster images so the original content is gone — not hiding under a box. They fund it with ads, skip registration, and publish a clear security blurb (SSL, servers in Germany, delete after one hour). If your only complaint about online PDF tools is “the free tier nags me after two files,” PDF24 is often the adult in the room.
The remaining complaint is the one HidePDF is built for: the unredacted PDF still has to go to PDF24 for that cloud editor to work. Their own copy says the app runs on their servers and your system is not burdened. That is the opposite of local processing.
What PDF24 gets right
True-ish redaction via rasterization. Converting the page to an image destroys the text layer for those pages. That is a known, valid technique (print-to-image families do the same). PDF24 documents it instead of pretending a highlighter is redaction.
Price and friction. No account, no “3 tasks per hour,” no watermark-as-a-business-model on the redact tool’s marketing. HidePDF matches free-and-simple; PDF24 matches it while also being a huge toolbox (merge, compress, OCR-adjacent utilities, Windows creator app).
Retention transparency. “Deleted after one hour” is better than silence. It is still policy, not a cryptographic proof, and the file existed on their disk during the hour. For a public flyer PDF that is fine. For a patient record it may not be.
What HidePDF does instead
Same conceptual ending — burned-in black regions, verify with search — but the PDF is opened with JavaScript in your browser. PDF24 never receives it. You also skip the ad-supported cloud UI if that is noise. You lose PDF24’s other 50 tools; HidePDF will not be your compress-and-merge suite.
Rasterization has a shared downside in both products: you trade selectable text in the output (at least on redacted pages) for safety. If you needed a fully searchable PDF after redaction, a professional editor that redacts content streams while keeping the rest as text (Acrobat/Foxit class) is the more precise — and usually paid — path. HidePDF and PDF24 both bias toward “destroy the page pixels.”
PDF24’s brush and shape blacken tools (pen, spray, squares) are more “draw to obscure” than HidePDF’s rectangle-only burn. If you needed to scribble an irregular stain, PDF24’s editor has more mark styles — on their server. HidePDF’s boxes are boring and sufficient for form fields. For a signature that is not a rectangle, draw a slightly generous box; do not chase artistic blacken brushes for privacy.
Their Windows desktop Creator is a genuine alternative inside the PDF24 family if cloud is the objection but you like the brand. HidePDF is for people who want the redact step in a tab with no installer at all. You can prefer Creator and still use HidePDF on a machine that is not yours.
When to use PDF24 anyway
Use PDF24 when the document is not regulated-sensitive and you want one bookmark for every PDF chore. Use their Windows PDF24 Creator if you want a free desktop toolbox. Use PDF24 if you already trust Geek Software’s German hosting story and your threat model is casual privacy, not NDA custody.
When HidePDF is the better redact alternative
Use HidePDF when the reason you searched for an alternative was the cloud hop, not the quality of PDF24’s raster save. Use it on files you would not attach to an email unredacted. Use it when “servers in Germany” does not satisfy a client who forbade any processor. Use it when you want the redaction tab and nothing else.
