Foxit PDF redaction alternative — free local blackout
Foxit is a real professional redaction suite. HidePDF is the free browser tool for people who need burned-in black boxes without buying Editor or sending files to Smart Redact.
Foxit PDF Editor (the PhantomPDF lineage) is the usual serious Acrobat alternative: desktop app, ribbon UI, true redaction, OCR, cloud connectors, eSign. Foxit’s own support article is unusually clear: covering text is not enough because it can still be copied; use Redaction (or Whiteout in their Pro sense of true removal) to permanently remove content. If you searched for a “Foxit PDF redaction alternative,” you might be avoiding a subscription, avoiding an install on a locked-down PC, or avoiding Smart Redact’s cloud path. Those are fair reasons. “Foxit does not really redact” is not a fair reason — they do.
HidePDF is the free, browser-local black-box tool for the subset of Foxit users who only needed that one Protect feature today.
What Foxit gives you that HidePDF does not
True desktop redaction with search. Mark for Redaction on text, images, and pages; Search & Redact for repeated strings. That is how legal teams knock out a name on page 1 through 400 without drawing 400 rectangles.
Smart Redact (Editor+). Foxit’s AI product page describes automatic detection of names, IDs, emails, and similar fields, hosted on Azure with encryption in transit, with files deleted after processing. TAA/SOC2 claims are Foxit’s; we are not auditing them here. The architectural fact is: Smart Redact is a cloud analysis feature. If your policy forbids that, the plugin is not your path even if you already own Foxit.
The rest of the suite. Editing with reflow, OCR, batch, sanitization in PDF Studio-class competitors, enterprise deployment. HidePDF has none of this on purpose.
Paid licensing. Foxit is subscription (and historically perpetual in some SKUs). Exact list prices move; treat it as a commercial editor, not a free web toy. HidePDF is free for the redaction job.
What HidePDF gives you that Foxit does not
No install, no license key, no Editor vs Editor+ matrix. The PDF stays in this browser tab. That matters on a Chromebook, a library machine, or a contractor laptop that cannot install Foxit this afternoon. Manual boxes are the whole UX — worse for a 200-page privilege log, better for a 4-page bank statement you need gone in two minutes.
HidePDF also does not upsell you into sending the file to Azure for detection. If you want AI pattern finding, Foxit (or similar) is the honest purchase. If you want to avoid that hop, do not use Smart Redact and do not use a random online “AI redact” either — use local boxes.
Foxit’s knowledge base is worth reading even if you never buy them: they spell out whiteout-versus-redaction in vendor language. Borrow that mental model. Then ignore the part where the fix is “buy Pro.” HidePDF is the free local expression of the same distinction. You still will not get overlay codes for FOIA exemptions, odd/even page scoping, or batch profiles. Those are why firms pay Foxit. A four-page invoice is not a FOIA production.
When to keep Foxit
Keep Foxit if redaction is a weekly legal/medical/finance workflow, if you need search-and-redact, if Smart Redact’s time savings are worth the cloud path and the Editor+ SKU, or if you already standardized the firm on Foxit for editing and signing. HidePDF will not run your DMS integration.
When HidePDF is the better alternative
Choose HidePDF when you do not want to buy Acrobat or Foxit for a handful of PDFs a year. Choose it when IT will not install desktop PDF software. Choose it when Smart Redact’s cloud processing is the thing you were trying to avoid. Choose it as a companion: use Foxit at work if you have it, use HidePDF on a personal device for a one-off file that should not enter the company cloud.
If your comparison is really “anything but Adobe,” see also redact a PDF without Adobe and our Adobe redaction alternative page — same local tool, Adobe-shaped intent.
How to black out in HidePDF
Mark by hand
You do not get Search & Redact here. Walk the pages. Repeat headers are where Foxit search would have helped — look twice.
Download and verify
Search and copy-paste test. Foxit users already know this step; do not skip it because the tool was free.

Frequently asked questions
Does Foxit do true redaction?
Yes. Foxit’s own knowledge base distinguishes Whiteout/overlays (content still copyable) from Redaction, which permanently removes visible text and images. That is a genuine professional feature HidePDF also aims to provide via burned-in export — Foxit adds search-and-redact, page ranges, and a full editor around it.
What is Foxit Smart Redact?
Smart Redact is Foxit’s AI-assisted detection of sensitive data, available with PDF Editor+ rather than every Foxit license. Foxit documents that analysis runs in their cloud (Azure) and that files are deleted after the task. That is powerful and it is not a local-only path.
Is HidePDF a Foxit replacement?
No. Foxit is a full PDF editor (OCR, eSign, conversion, enterprise admin). HidePDF only redacts visually selected regions in the browser. Buy Foxit if you need the suite. Use HidePDF if you need free local blackout and no install.
Does HidePDF search-and-redact every SSN automatically?
No. Foxit’s Search & Redact and Smart Redact are the features for that. HidePDF is manual boxes. Manual is slower and does not require a subscription or a cloud AI pass.
