Can a Redacted PDF Be Un-Redacted?

If the redaction was properly flattened — pixel data overwritten in the page — it cannot be un-redacted. There is no undo that restores information that no longer exists in the file. Flattened means the data is not hidden — it is absent

When redaction replaces page content with burned-in pixels (or deletes text operators and fills the area), the sensitive string is not waiting underneath a mask. Viewers and editors have nothing to reveal in that region. You cannot “unlock” a correct flatten any more than you can undelete a byte that was overwritten and never stored elsewhere in the file.

None of those prove that a flattened burn-in can be unlocked. They prove that cosmetic covers and parallel copies are common. Separate the myths: un-redacting a true flatten would require recovering deleted samples from the file — which are not there — or finding another copy that was never redacted.
